Sam Rayburn Reservoir Fishing Report
for
February 13, 2010

How tough is it on Sam Rayburn these days? Well, the winner of the FLW Collegiate Series last Saturday needed only three bass and just under 9 pounds to win the first place $10,000. Angler's Quest individual event fished out of Rayburn's Mill Creek also needed about 9 pounds to win first place.

However, Angler's Quest Team event fielded 46 teams and Rayburn regulars, Rusty Clark who lives on the lake and partner Cory Rambo of Orange,TX put together a good limit weighing 19.10 pounds and winning the $2000 first place check.

Second place dropped to just over 12 pounds and third place was just under 12 pounds. Tournament directors, Bill and Barbara Long stated that there were only four 5-bass limits weighed in during the event. With those three tournaments to look at one can consider that the bass fishing on Rayburn has been tough with low water temperatures the main culprit.

As far as patterns and techniques, the winning team gave no info about how they caught their fish other than they fished main lake areas near the mid-lake section of Rayburn.

The second place team worked the southern part of the lake fishing Bill Lewis Rat-L-Traps in the grass and actually culled two times. The third and fourth place teams fish mid lake areas with traps in the grass.

Don't be afraid to experiment with Rat-l-Traps currently as you have to do something different right now to get a bass to hit a trap. Anglers are using traps from 1/4 to 1 ounce to try and figure the best presentation. Some anglers are really slowing things down to a crawl while others are looking for a reaction bite and are smoking it. There was one report on a top three finisher using a jigging spoon in 35 feet in the mid lake area of the lake. Also, a few bass were reported caught on a drop shot. My personal best results currently has been with Carolina rig in 2 to 6 feet as well as 2- to 25 feet.
