When you pass the old stove pictured here, you can almost hear the mumbled whisperings of the countless stories and tall tales that must have passed around it on many a winter's evening of the past. Originally opened in 1880, C. A. Nethery's "Mercantile" in nearby Milam, TX handled just about everything the area frontier families needed. It's still here waiting for your visit - with memorabilia, antiques, and present day hardware products.

Fort Jesup State Commemorative Area was originally a fort on the border of the United States (at the time of the Louisiana Purchase) and Spanish Texas. An original small kitchen has been preserved. Frequent programs presented at Fort Jesup bring history to life for visitors.

Historic Sabine County jail sits on the square in nearby Hemphill, Texas with the restored courthouse and the famous "Cedar Tree" where the old men still play dominoes daily. Walk through the old cells and see the "hanging rope" still in place. The jail also has a museum.
